10 Tips To Laying A Strong Foundation With Your Significant Other

On August 6, 2015, Jimmy came into my life on the first day working in finance. He entered the suite I was working in to share a funny story about a Yankee game he had gone to the night before.

Later on, he told me the story telling was a motive to get a better look at the “new blonde” in the office.

Fast forward, and last year on August 6th, 2020, he proposed on the same day we had met five years earlier.

We have built a slow, steady foundation for six years together, far from perfect but instead ever-evolving. Never rushed—but unfolding as it is meant to.

Today, I share advice from myself and others in my social media community on laying a strong, meaningful foundation with your significant other:

Continue to focus on outside friendships. Focus on friendships that each of you has separately, as well as mutual friends. -Victoria G.

Never take each other for granted. Always have each other’s best interests at heart. -Mary S.

Before you get married, talk about what kind of relationship you both want. Don’t talk bad about each other to others. Talk to each other, not about each other. -Desiree R.

Always have a sense of humor  -Ashley C.

Have a conversation about future plans of having children and what that looks like – whether you both work or if one of you stays at home. Stay on the same page parenting and work as a team. Your family unit should be the number one priority -Maria K.

Saving and planning for the future is very important, but don’t let it come at the expense of the present. You are only young once, and you can’t bring a single penny to the grave with you. -Tim T.

Support each other’s dreams and help each other with your long-term goals.

Have deep conversations about money and be on the same page financially.

Communicate and always incorporate honesty. Remember, your significant other is not a mind reader.

Travel and have adventures. Seeing new places is good for the soul.
