We have all been there. The moment Spring is just around the corner, we feel the need to get ourselves organized. The challenge is we aren’t always motivated to Spring clean.
Rest assured, Spring cleaning doesn’t need to be overwhelming; we just need to have a plan in place.
If you’ve been feeling lazy and have been avoiding the issue of cleaning your house, I hope you find this article helpful to stop procrastinating and get to work 😊
If you feel your home has become a little unorganized, know you’re not alone. I recently read an article that said one in four Americans has a clutter problem.
I, too, have struggled in the past and often want to focus on my writing instead of cleaning.
However, when I am ready to get down to work, the 7 tips below help me.
7 Tips To Get Motivated To Spring Clean
1. Have A Plan In Place
Having a plan in place to clean will help set you up for success. Not all households are created equal. In other words, behind every closed door, we all have unique obligations and circumstances that can make it challenging to maintain household chores.
Chronic pain, illness, motherhood, and anxiety, amongst many other obstacles, can all make cleaning problematic. It’s important to go easy on yourself. I often say— “We can’t make progress if we are busy beating ourselves up in the process.”
To be honest, I have had chronic pain in both my hands for years, and when the pain gets unbearable, the last thing I want to do is a load of laundry or any household chores. During this time, what my body needs is rest, so whatever situation you find yourself in, don’t be too hard on yourself 😊
Aim to make slow, steady progress without getting burned out. The worst thing you can do is get yourself overwhelmed. Emotional overwhelm can cause you not to take any action at all.
Have a plan in place that will help you achieve success. Small action steps are your best friend.
2. Set Realistic Expectations
At some point, a dirty sink full of dishes or a hamper that looks like it’s about to burst at the seams is inevitable.
Set your own family’s expectations given your situation. I don’t know of anyone that has a clean house all the time, so don’t get hung up on those social media photos that try to tell you otherwise.
Set expectations that fit with your life, given your circumstances.
3. Light A Candle
A fresh scented candle can help jump-start your efforts. Think fresh linen, white sage, lavender, and citrus.
Below are some scents I love.
4. Put On Your Favorite Music
If you’re feeling stressed or anxious about even the thought of cleaning, I have good news for you. Music can help alleviate those emotions. Science backs this theory up with neuromusicology, which studies how our brain reacts to music.
There are therapeutic effects on your mind and body from listening to feel-good music. For that reason, why not start with a great playlist that can amp you up?
Below are some upbeat song options to listen to while cleaning— a combination of 80s, pop, and country.
Spring Cleaning Playlist
- “Don’t Stop Believing” Journey
- “I Gotta Feeling” Black Eyed Peas
- “Just Getting Started” Jason Aldean
- “Livin’ on a Prayer” Bon Jovi
- “Just Dance” Lady Gaga
- “Unwritten” Natasha Bedingfield
- “Good Feeling” Flo Rida
- “Fire Burning” Sean Kingston
- “Broadway Girls” Lil Durk ft. Morgan Wallen
- “Shake It Off” Taylor Swift
5. Ask For Help And Have An Accountability Partner
If you’re feeling super stuck, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Lean on a trusted friend or significant other to help you achieve your cleaning goals.
A friend can be the perfect support system if you are the type of person that has a hard time letting go of things.
They can also help you if you’re tackling a large area of your house.
6. Set Goals
Setting goals can help map out what you want as a result of your efforts. Think about your end goals when it comes to Spring cleaning. What do you want to take away from the hard work you put in?
Is it clarity? A sense of calm?
Keep your mindset focused on how you will feel once the Spring cleaning is complete.
If you have read my articles in the past, you know how much I thrive on baby steps.
That means, even if it takes you weeks to clean your whole house, you’ll be happier that you did a thorough job.
As I always say, baby steps also get you to the finish line.

7. Set A Timer
To prevent procrastination, set a timer so that you won’t get sidetracked. Don’t attempt to answer texts or multitask when you are cleaning. For example, set a timer for 30 minutes. Doing so will help you use this time to have an optimal level of focus.
You’d be surprised at how efficient you can become when you feel a little bit of a time constraint.
